Marker 9 falls near the beginning of a numbered Everglades route, where the terrain starts to open up and the park's characteristic landscape becomes visible in all directions. At this stage of a route, the shift from the access road environment into the wetland is largely complete and the experience starts to feel exploratory.
Stop 9 is a useful orientation point for first-time visitors, offering enough of the Everglades character to understand what the ecosystem offers without requiring a long walk or ride. Many visitors pause here to take their first photos of open sawgrass marsh with an unobstructed horizon.
