Marker 8 sits near the beginning of a numbered Everglades route, past the first few stops and into the stretch where the landscape begins to feel genuinely remote. By this point, the urban sounds of South Florida have usually faded and the acoustic signature of the wetlands takes over — frogs, insects, wind through the sawgrass.
This early section of the route is popular with morning walkers and cyclists who want to experience the Everglades before the day's heat builds. The low angle of morning light across the prairie and water creates a beautiful visual quality that the midday sun cannot match.
