Marker 23 is a waypoint on an Everglades observation route, set within one of the largest subtropical wilderness areas in the United States. The surrounding sawgrass prairies stretch to the horizon, broken occasionally by tree islands known as hammocks that rise just above the water line.
These tree island formations are visible from several spots along numbered routes, and marker 23 may offer glimpses of one. Hammocks harbor a surprisingly dense community of wildlife, from snakes and raccoons to rare orchids clinging to cypress branches.
