Stop 37 is a waypoint along a numbered Everglades route, one of many that punctuate the journey through this extraordinary wilderness. The Everglades holds more species of wading birds than anywhere else in North America, and in the dry season — roughly November through April — large concentrations of birds gather at spots like this as water levels recede. Dry-season visits to stops along these routes can be especially rewarding, with hundreds of great egrets, tricolored herons, and wood storks gathered at dwindling pools. The density of birdlife during this period is one of the great wildlife spectacles of the United States.
